Every streaming merger tells the same story: more content, more scale, more market share. The global giants set the rules and every platform that followed played to them. But this was no ordinary consolidation. When two of India’s biggest entertainment giants, JioCinema and Disney Hotstar, came together, there was an opportunity to create something genuinely new.
This wasn't just a merger. It was a Big Bang. Jio had already proven that connectivity could be a civilisational act, connecting a billion people to the internet for the first time. The question for JioHotstar was whether that same conviction could be brought to streaming: not just more content for more people, but a platform built on the belief that India isn’t one audience but many. Across languages, geographies, cultures and traditions, everyone in India deserved to find themselves onscreen.
We built JioHotstar not as the sum of two platforms but as a new kind of superbrand, born from the collision of two giants and not a compromise between them. At its heart was The Spark: an asymmetric symbol of white hot energy, momentum and a world of infinite possibilities bursting into life. Not a merger, but an explosive new beginning.
Within 45 days of launch, JioHotstar became the most subscribed streaming platform in India, surpassing Netflix and Amazon Prime, with around 500 million active users and over 650 million downloads. The CMO of JioStar called it a testament to the partnership and the work done to set the brand up for long-term success. Entertainment, as the brand has it, is only the first chapter.
